LCCE will use state-of-the-art gasification technology to avoid harmful emissions while extracting energy from petcoke. LCCE will cleanly convert the feedstock chemically under high temperature and pressure to create clean synthesis gas with very low emissions. This low Btu synthesis gas can then be processed into clean end products.
The LCCE project is also one of three large-scale industrial carbon capture projects that were awarded a U.S. Department of Energy grant as part of an effort to capture carbon dioxide from industrial sources for storage or beneficial use. As part of the clean fuels aspect of the project, approximately 90 percent of the CO2 captured, equal to 4.5 million tons annually, is planned to be sold to Denbury Onshore, LLP for use in its enhanced oil recovery (EOR) operations in the Gulf region.
